Shiya's First Day at School

Today is my darling’s first day at school.

This is after almost one year break from her Toddler’s class , which she had only attended for 3 mths as she had been falling sick. We put her back to the same school, but this time the location is different as we wanted to put her near to her grandparents whom will be her caregivers after school.

Early in the morning, I took her to school. When we reached there, the fresh and crispy morning breeze from the sea woke me instantly. To ensure that she is adapting well to the new enivronment and people, I took the day off to be around her, and to also see how the classes are conducted.

Everyone was gathered in the hall. Shiya was a bit apprehensive but she did not cling on to me tightly. The teachers were warm and friendly, so she did not take long to get comfortable with them. But she was a little reluctant to mix with her new classmates, when the teacher encouraged her to play some puzzles with the others. Seeing this, Teacher Sally gave her a puzzle to play on her own. You could see her mood perked up once she started playing it.

Not too long later, at about 8.30 am, all the children were be herded to the breakfast area. The breakfast they had that day was a hard-boiled egg, which I thought was somewhat odd or sufficient to be a meal on its own. Perhaps due to her anxiety or sleepiness, she did not take much of it. She kept telling a teacher, who sat besides her at the table, that she is very tired. It is no wonder she is tired, as she slept around 1 am the night before!

While she was taking breakfast, I took the opportunity to survey the area. I love the sight of the sea just outside the school and the morning breeze it brings! The air was so fresh and crispy, and you could also hear the birds chirping! How often can we find a school in Singapore that is near to the sea, and in the midst of greenery? I am really glad that we have chosen such a wonderful place for her.

Half an hour later, the children are scooted back to the assembly hall where they will sing a few songs, and do a bit of exercise. This is when I saw Shiya instantly transformed from a sleepy worm to an excited monkey. She was hopping and laughing throughout the whole session.

After the session, all the kids were scooted to to their classrooms. This is when I am assured that Shiya has adapted well, and it is time for me to sneak off home.
