Putting things back is one of the most important thing we have taught Chevonne.
Since she was 12 mths old and after I have started work, my parent in laws have been patiently teaching her to put things back after she has used. Initially she did not understand it, but after umpteenth repetition day in and out, she finally understood it perfectly in both Mandarin and English by the time she turns 13 mths old.
I can't tell you how thankful my hubby and I are for this. It has been so tiring to keep picking after her... especially after a long day of work. Nowadays, we just have to point the objects and say "Put it back." or "Fang4 Hui2 Qu4", she would automatically pick up everything back to where she took it from.
One time, she took our Xbox game controller much to our shock cos we have put rather deep in on the TV console. We gathered she must have tip-toed and stretch over to reach for it. When we saw the controller in her hands, as usual, we told her to put it back. We thought she would just conveniently put on the table just in front of the console (which is supposed to act as a barrier to deter her from touching the things on the console) since that is convenient. To our surprise, she took the more difficult route by actually tip-toed, lean over hard to put it where we had placed it in the first place! It took her quite a while to put it at the original position.
Our lives as parents have become so much better eversince. No more we need to clean up a house that seems to have been wrecked by a tornado everyday. All we need to do is say that magic word, and voila... the job is done! :)
So my advice is... quickly teach your toddler this if you haven't!;)
(btw, I have been wanting to blog this but never found the time. And when I do, I forgot. :P)

thanks for sharing!
its indeed true that we need to teach from young irregardless they understand it or not.
Somehow someday it will sink into their brains yah!
:)
yeah, kids are much more smarter then we think. we may not think they understand certain things at such tender age but you will be surprised how soon they pick it up if you consistently and patiently teach them.
for instance, 2 days ago, during a BBQ, me and my hubby were surprised to see that she knows how to throw the rubbish in the big outdoor garbage bin. we never teach her that! We then later found out, again it is my PILs who have been teaching her. :)
